Photo by Peter McIntosh Join us for a wonderful, winter hike to Stanley Gap and Rocky Mountain! From the Stanley Gap parking lot the climb is rather steep but then it becomes pretty easy. As we climb we'll get beautiful views of the Rich Mountain Wilderness area to the south through the leafless forest. The first three miles is shared with bike riders (although I've never seen a lot of them, usually one or two riders). We'll work our way slowly up to near the top of 3460 foot Rocky Mountain, and, if there's time, we can take a short spur route to the top for the views. From here on the views are to the east and north, with some views of Blue Ridge Lake. Much of this hike will be fairly easy ups and downs. The last three miles are spent hiking down into the Tennessee Valley and then along an unused, unpaved end of Weaver Creek Road, and back along a short paved section of Laurel Ridge Drive
This is a dog friendly hike. All dogs should be on a leash and be comfortable with other dogs and people.
