Photo by Peter McIntosh Join us as we hike to the peak of Eagle Mountain located in the western end of the Southern Nantahala Wilderness. We'll generally follow abandoned roadbeds, occasionally blocked by fallen trees, to the top of the 4,259 ft summit. This is not the shortest route, but it is the least difficult to the peak. Since every hike is a "nature hike" to me, you will see, for instance, how trees such as yellowwood, yellow birch, and yellow buckeye can be identified in their winter state and see ferns including Christmas fern, marginal wood fern, fancy fern, rock cap, and walking fern.
