Brawley Mountain/Benton MacKaye Hike Saturday, February 18, 2012 |

Join us for a spectacular hike approximately 7.5 miles from Wilscot Gap on Highway 60 that climbs, sometimes strenuous at first, but usually moderately over 4 named peaks- Tipton Mountain, Bald Top, Brawley Mountain and Garland Mountain then descends to the Toccoa River. This trail hangs around on or near ridge tops enough that we will have lots of pleasant views in almost every direction this time of year. We will hike at a leisurely pace taking time for pictures and maybe some winter tree and plant identification along the way. We will relax and enjoy lunch on top of Brawley Mountain at the base of the observation tower (the tower is not open to the public). By the time we arrive at the top of Brawley the steepest climbs will be behind us and the rest of the hike is easy to moderate with excellent views.
This is a dog friendly hike.
All dogs should be on a leash and be comfortable with other dogs and people. Please be sure your dog will be able to walk the length of this hike.
Leader: Tom Colkett
Meeting Time, Place, and Directions:
We will meet at 8:30 am at the Shallowford Bridge along Aska Highway. We'll have to split shuttle on this, leaving half the cars along the road beside the Toccoa River then shuttle over to Highway 60 with the rest of the cars and park at Wilscot Gap and then begin the hike. We've timed this shuttle to be about 20 minutes due to the need to drive around the mountains included in the hike. Of course at the end of the hike we shuttle back to pick up the rest of our cars.
