OUTING ALERT:

Beech Creek hike with Brent Martin

Here's a brand new ForestWatch hike!  Joe Gatins and Honor Woodard will also be co-leaders with Brent.

This one is for the adventurous that don't mind steep slopes and stream crossings, including about three miles of steady uphill, and three tricky stream crossings. You'll be rewarded with views of High Creek Falls, Beech Creek Gorge and some historic structures along the way.

Meeting time, place and directions:

Meet 9:00 a.m. in Clayton, GA at the intersection of Persimmon Road and Highway 76. (About 6.5 miles west of downtown Clayton via Hwy 76.)

Outing Location:

Southern Nantahala Wilderness, Georgia and North Carolina, in the Tallulah River watershed, near Tate City.

Distance & Difficulty:

7-mile round trip loop. Strenuous with 1500 ft elevation gain.

USGS Quadrangle:

Rainbow Springs

Bring:

Lunch, water, rain gear, walking staff, and appropriate winter clothing and footwear. Camera if desired.

Special gear for this hike: Due to stream crossings you will need a walking staff or poles for balance.  To keep boots dry bring heavy duty plastic bags (trash compactor bags work well) or waders.

Reservations required. This outing is free of charge, and open to everyone “first come, first served” up to the limit. Sign-up Deadline: 3pm Thurs prior to outing - but outings tend to fill up long before the deadline.
