Support the Land and
Water Conservation Fund within new Gulf Oil Spill legislation
|
Funding should be considered THIS WEEK by the House of Representatives-We have a critical
opportunity to secure full, dedicated funding for LWCF and your urgent action by END-OF-DAY THURSDAY
is needed!
The Gulf Oil Spill and LWCF
The tragedy of the BP Oil Spill reminds us how vulnerable our public lands and
waters, surrounding communities, and wildlife are to harm. We need sustained
investment to provide long term protection of the natural places that are so
important to us as Americans, and the Land and Water Conservation Fund was
designed to do just that. It is time to keep the promise that was made to use
all the funding deposited in LWCF to protect places Americans care about for
future generations.
LWCF was authorized to receive a very small percentage of revenue from offshore
leases for oil and gas- $900 million a year. However, Congress and
various Administrations have diverted many of these funds from their intended
purpose! Today, the LWCF has an authorized balance of more than $17
billion that should have been spent on conservation, but was not- a $17 billion
broken promise!

New to this issue? Here's more info:
Land and Water Conservation Fund dollars are used by Federal Natural Resource
agencies to purchase conservation lands. This is how the Chattahoochee
River National Recreation Area
was acquired and how important National Forest lands that protect the
Appalachian Trail and the Chattooga Wild and Scenic River
were acquired.
These dollars are not generated from tax
revenue! They come from funding generated from federal off shore oil leases
and are considered conservation mitigation funds. Click HERE for more detailed information about the LWCF provision within the Oil Spill Energy Package.
Thank you for taking action on behalf of our public lands!
